Nest Watch
The Montana Audubon Center lies in the heart of the 72,000 square mile Yellowstone River Basin and within minutes of the urban center of Billings. Initially lunched in 1998, a partnership with Yellowstone River Parks Association, Yellowstone Valley Audubon Society and Montana Audubon has made the Center possible. On the Center's 54 acres of land, now a reformed gravel pit, an all-volunteer effort has planted more than 65,000 trees and shrubs for habitat restoration.
In an effort to understand the impact current and future restoration initiates have on the bird population, a nest box survey was implemented. Understanding the species of birds using these nest boxes and their brood survival rate aide Center staff in accessing their efforts. Training includes site orientation, Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Nest Watch protocols and data collection sheets. Participants are then assigned specific nest box locations and it's off to observe!
This survey takes place from mid-April- mid-July.
