Montana Audubon Citizen Science Opportunities

You don’t need to be a professional biologist to contribute valuable observations to science and have a great time doing it. Consider joining one of these citizen efforts and help provide valuable information about the birds, wildlife, and natural systems of Montana and beyond.
*ATTENTION  Thank you to everyone who continues to be interested in Montana Audubon’s citizen science projects! Despite COVID-19, our critical bird research will continue because birding happens to be the perfect social distancing activity! We strongly encourage surveys to be done individually or within your close networks but keeping 6 ft apart. Please check our website and social media channels regularly for updates. Our top priority is public safety and we feel a strong responsibility to our volunteers, supporters, and fellow Montanans.

BLACK SWIFT
We’ve been searching for nesting Black Swifts since the summer of 2014. There are only a handful of known nest sites in Montana, and half of these were found in the last four years, some by volunteers. What could be better than a summer hike to plunging waterfalls?
Picture
CHIMNEY SWIFTS
Montana Audubon is partnering with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks throughout eastern Montana to discover where Chimney Swifts are active and breeding; often in towns and near buildings with large chimneys.

Climate Watch
Climate Watch aims to document species’ responses to climate change and test Audubon’s climate models by having volunteers in the field look for birds where Audubon’s climate models predict them to be in the 2020s.

Long Billed Curlew
Montana Audubon is partnering with The Montana Natural Heritage Program to survey Great Blue Heron Rookeries. We are looking for citizen volunteers state-wide to help confirm potential new rookeries, populations, conservation opportunities, and threats for our Great Blue Herons in Montana.
If you’re out birding and see Harlequin Ducks, look for leg bands! Some Harlequins in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and British Columbia have been marked with colored leg bands or nasal discs to better understand conservation needs. This year, Montana Audubon is partnering with Glacier National Park, Glacier National Park Conservancy, and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to mark addition pairs in and around Glacier.
Are you ready to hear the ‘currlleeee’ of the Long-billed Curlew? These charismatic shorebirds rely on Montana's grassland valleys and we need your help finding as many as possible in and around the Mission, Helena, and Blackfoot Valleys.

Nest Watch
The Montana Audubon Center in Billings conducts spring Nest Watch surveys to gather baseline data on bird species using nest boxes on site. This information will play a role in how the Center continues its habitat restoration efforts.

ROSY-FINCHES
These alpine birds are in need of baseline data to understand their population trends. Rosy-Finches are generally found nesting in cliff crevices, rock slides and talus, among glaciers and snowfields above timberline, and typically nesting on north or north-east facing slopes.

Support for these surveys, volunteer coordination, and training opportunities comes from:
The LEAW Family Foundation, The Sargent Endowment, and The Glacier National Park Conservancy, and The Cadeau Foundation and The Montana Chapter of The Wildlife Society

Montana Audubon
birds and beyond

Founded in 1976, Montana Audubon is an independent, statewide conservation organization whose mission is to promote appreciation, knowledge and conservation of Montana’s native birds, other wildlife, and natural ecosystems and to safeguard biological diversity for current and future generations.

In our vision for the future, we seek to create an environment in which all of Montana’s native bird species have healthy, sustainable populations, ensured by long-term habitat security. Montana Audubon uses science, conservation education and engages in public policy work to protect our state’s incomparable wildlife and landscapes.
