Great Blue Heron Survey Locations By Region

Picture
While there are many ways to navigate Montana, using Fish Wildlife & Parks' seven regions is one of the best ways for us to track our research efforts. All seven regions are home to at least a handful of active heron rookeries. As we pilot this survey effort in 2020, we will will aim to scatter our effort across the state. Some locations were chosen because they have only historic (pre 1990) records of nesting, some were chosen because we "found" them during remote aerial surveys, and yet others were chosen simply for ease of access. All of the sites we have picked are important, and while we may find that some sites no longer harbor rookeries, that information is important too! Most of these rookeries have not been visited in almost a decade!
No matter where you are, we can work with you to find a potential survey location.
